This 2012 McLaren MP4-12C originally stickered at $273, 765. It has 24k miles. So how much for this "super car" (as some might call it)? $140k. Still not exactly cheap, right? It is available on eBay and the current bid is at $88k. Are we seeing the original "mass market" McLaren crater in value? If this car sells for $140k, it will have lost around $134k in value in 3 years. Did I mention it has 24k miles on it?

While $134k is certainly a lot of money, it's about 50% of the original price, which sounds about right to me.
The initial depreciation rate (as a percentage and a raw number) increases with increasing original MSRP of the vehicle. Take a look at prices for 3 year old Golfs, E-Classes, and 458s with similar mileage, and I think you'll see a trend.

Maybe it has something to do with all the other models they've brought out since then? It seemed like pretty much everybody stopped caring/writing about the 12C after the P1, 650s, etc. came out. Then again, I'm not in the market for one of these cars and don't know anybody who is, so I can't really speak about what's going in the mind of a potential buyer.

I do believe 12Cs are known for massive depreciation.

I think everything you're saying is spot-on. It's a sort-of orphan now isn't it? I actually would consider one if it hit this low of a price. The question for me would be the actual cost of ownership. It's not a great deal if it has exorbitant maintenance costs.

I know someone that is in the market for a $90k ish car.... If they would take $50K off of their asking price I'm sure he would buy it. Maybe they would give him a deal since two of his current cars are from this dealer.

There is nowhere for the price to go except for down. It'll be 20 or more years before these cars begin to appreciate. It wasn't all that long ago that an air cooled 911 was dirt cheap.

I cannot believe that these are that cheap, It will be another several years before the 458 will drop this low. It must just be the name McLaren that makes them less valuable on the second hand market.

The 458 will not get that low anytime soon my friend. Last of Ferrari's naturally aspirated V8... yeah don't think depreciation will hit.

This one obviously has a lot of miles but it is getting close:

I have no doubt that the 458 will drop in price for another few years, the price will rebound because it will be the last naturally aspirated V8 but I think it has to go down before it can go up.

Perhaps, props to whomever put 60K miles on one! Likely a rental outfit like Gotham Dream Cars...and then its a risky buy.

McLaren HOSED their early-adopter clients with this car (and its rapid replacement).

My friend who sells F-cars thinks the 458 will go like the 550 in that it will go down to about $75k before coming back up to about $100. Then it will be years before the last NA V8 price bump happens. (If he's right I'll buy one whenever it gets below $85k.)

Could this be a dip? Is there a chance buying one now will show some appreciation in 3-5 yrs?

Dude...no. That's not how negotiating works.
Offer $80k
> watch him laugh at you, but stay calm
> plop a briefcase on the desk and say you have cash
> go back in time and ask your bank to give you a loan in cash
> snap back to present, see him quiet down real quick and accept the offer
> Take the keys, put on driving gloves and sunglasses
>Drive into the horizon

I doubt it. The 12C just doesn't have allure, especially when McLaren is busy rolling out new cars across a wider range.

CarMax doesn't carry McLarens, do they? And why can I not directly reply to the OP?
